BMW X5 pre-purchase inspection
E70 and F15, 2007–2018
The X5 is one of the most sought-after used SUVs. Repairs to the xDrive drivetrain and the suspension are expensive, so that's where the inspection starts.

Two minor notes: transfer case maintenance and cosmetics on the rear bumper and wheels.

Transfer case & xDriveSlight judder on tight turns; fluid never changedphotos: 6Monitor
- What we found
- On a tight full-lock turn in a car park there is a slight judder at the front. No leaks, the transfer case clutch adaptation is within range. No record of the transfer case fluid ever being changed.
- What it means
- An early sign of worn transfer case fluid — common on xDrive past 150,000 km. Caught early it's usually fixed with fresh fluid; ignored, the transfer case clutch wears and the repair costs far more.
- What to do
- Change the transfer case fluid to BMW spec and adapt. We recommend a check drive afterwards.Approx.: €120–180.
Body & paintScratched rear bumper, kerbed wheelsphotos: 10Monitor
- What we found
- Factory paint on all 15 panels (100–140 µm). The rear bumper has parking scratches at the corners; two wheels are kerbed on the rim.
- What it means
- Cosmetic only — no signs of an accident or body repair.
- What to do
- Optional: touch up the bumper and refurbish the wheels. A good point when negotiating.Approx.: €150–300.

Typical weak spots of the BMW X5
- 1
xDrive transfer case
Why it matters: Worn fluid and clutch in the transfer case — judder and binding on tight turns.
How we check: Full-lock turns, clutch adaptation, fluid history.
- 2
Rear air suspension (E70)
Why it matters: Cracked air bags and a tired compressor — the rear sits low.
How we check: Ride height after standing, compressor operation, module faults.
- 3
Oil leaks
Why it matters: Cam cover and oil-cooler gaskets — a common source of burning smells.
How we check: Lift inspection, traces on and under the engine.
We check everything else too — body, diagnostics, suspension, documents and a road test. The full list of checks
